Race and Discipline

Some troubling statistics about expulsions...

Research shows that “during the sixth-grade year, more than 66 percent of poor, black males with disabilities were suspended once, and many were suspended multiple times. (Fuentes, 2003 p.19)” Similar research is shows that boys, children of minorities, and children with disabilities are expelled more frequently than their peers. In preschool settings studies suggest that “on average, boys were expelled at 4.5 times the rate of girls, African-Americans at twice the rate of Latinos and Caucasians, and 4-year-olds at 1.5 times the rate of 3-year-olds.” (Lewin, 2005 pg.1)

This to us shows how behavior issues are linked to school environment, not just individual students. This also shows educators predisposition to look for behavior problems in boys, racial minorities, and students with disabilities. How can we help these students escape a culture which accepts and propagates this idea?
